Ethics of research involving humans in epidemiology and public health research

Do you conduct research involving human participants? Are you subject to the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS)? Does your research require research ethics board review? What ethics issues should you consider in the consent process? What relevant provisions on data management are found within the TCPS?

This presentation, given at the School of Public Health and Epidemiology at the University of Ottawa, will answer those questions and address other ethics issues in epidemiological and public health research. Hanan Abdel-Akher, a member of the Secretariat on Responsible Conduct of Research, introduces the TCPS and its core principles, as well as related issues and considerations around consent and data management.

Hanan Abdel-Akher is a Senior Policy Analyst with the Secretariat on Responsible Conduct of Research. Her role includes interpreting the second edition of TCPS, developing new ethics guidance in response to emerging issues, and community outreach and education. Prior to joining the Secretariat, Hanan was a Program Officer delivering various grants and scholarships programs at the Scholarships and Fellowships, as well as the Strategic Grants directorates of NSERC.
